Another Trip to Baja and Another Great Race.

The pre-ride was great this year! We started on Friday outside of Mexicali and rode about 130 miles down to Borrego on the first day. Great terrain. Wide open on the dry lake, fun washes through canyons, and tough rockey sections.

We stayed in San Felipe friday night at a great place. Close to the ocean, lots of room, AC, and hot showers. Can't ask for more than that.

Got up early on Saturday. John, Mark, Torsten, and Rob headed out from the house to get started on the 120 mile loop ride we had planned for the day.

Jo and I checked out the Beach and met the group about 30 miles up the road in Borrrego. 30 miles of huge sand woops didn't sound like a lot of fun so I waited till Borrego then jumped on my bike and rode the rest of the section which was a blast. Woops, long straight sections, and sandy washes.

Finished up the ride back at the San Felipe house, ate, showered, packed up and headed to Ensenada for the night.

Stayed at Estero Beach in Ensenada. Same place we always stay. It's a great place to camp. Safe, plenty of room for the bikes and race cars, showers, pool, jacauzzi, and a race track.

Sunday we had a nice day off just hangin around camp.

Monday we headed north out of Ojos Negros. Went through some rough steep terrain and up into the pine forest. Looked a lot like riding around Flag, but a lot of the road was sand and silt. Riding through the pines on a sand road was RAD! Only in Baja.

Took a brake at La Pondersoa had a cold drink, then headed out on a fun, twisty bermed track to Rumerosa.

There was a lot of hype about this road. They say it drops about 4000 to 5000 vertical feet. The road was narrow with sharp turns. You wouldn't want to loose it on this road. But it wasn't bad.

Monday evening and we were back to where we started on Saturday morning. Loaded the bikes and headed back into Ensenada.


Tuesday we road from San Vecente to Erenderia, which is a little town I have been going to for the last six years or so. Awesome ride along the pacific coast.

We rented some boards from Crazy Rick at Coyote Cals and headed to Long Beach to catch some waves.

Riding and Surfing in Baja. It doesn't get much better then that.

The waves were small but good.

BAJA........... I love it down here..

John, Rob and Brian. Headed out from the surf spot for a little night ride to Ojos and back to Ensenada.

Wednesday Torsten and I headed through town, to the starting line, down the wash, and out of Ensenada. It was about a 40 mile ride from the start to Ojos and the only section we needed to see. Took it slow and had a good ride, although I think Torsten managed to take a digger and bend up his bars. We rode back to Ensenada and had some Burritos.

Thursday was Tec. and Contingency. Always a zoo.

Friday after a long wait the Race was finally on.

It was a good feeling to get the car rolling and head out of town.

The wash was lined with people all the way through Ensenada. Always an experience.

The car ran good. Still needed some fine tuning.

We made 200 miles into the race and ended up loosing our Clutch and Reverse gear in our differential.


We spent most of the night working on it. Replaced the clutch and diff but still couldn't get the tires to spin. Finally loaded the car up at about 4am and called it. It was a great 200 miles and I could tell a number of stories, but the blog is long enough already. If you are interested you can hear them when you join us on the next trip.


Here Is "El Guapo". John soloed the race on his 450X this year. Quite a ride. He left out at 7am and finished the next day around Noon I think. He was pretty beat up. But has now Soloed the Baja 1000 on a Quad and a Motorcycle.

Mark had a good race. He had some minor problems with bending up A arms. Had to repair them a number of times which slowed him down quite a bit. He managed to hit a class one car in a silt bed. The story he tells is his car just kept going and the class one stayed stuck in the silt.


Mark finished 3rd which was a little disappointing after winning the Baja 500, but he is the Score UTV points winner for 2009. Congrats to Mark.

Another great race down in Baja. I wish I could do Baja and the race more justice, but I am not sure there are words to explain it. If you've been there you know what I am talking about. See you next race. Rob thanks for the all the photos.
